Standard kids’ beds can help toddlers transition from cribs and toddler beds.

When you have a toddler in your life, it seems like they can outgrow anything overnight: clothes, toys, rules, and even their beds. If you’ve been considering a regular kids’ bed for your toddler, but aren’t sure about the timing, then this blog post is for you.

Grown-up Answers for “Is My Toddler Ready for a Regular Kids’ Bed?”

Your toddler is too long for the crib/toddler bed. Perhaps the most obvious sign it’s time for a standard kids’ bed is when your child no longer fits in their current bed. If your toddler is too long when outstretched in their bed, or they have to sleep diagonally to fit, then he or she may be ready to move on to a regular bed made for kids.

They ask to sleep on the floor or in your bed instead of their own. If your toddler prefers to fall asleep on their bedroom floor or regularly asks to sleep in your bed, then it may be a sign your toddler is ready for regular kids’ bed. Of course, this isn’t a guarantee, because many kids just want to be closer to their parents or caregivers (aww!). Try asking your toddler if their current bed feels too small or why they aren’t as interested in sleeping there.

Your toddler talks about their friends’ regular kids’ bed. It doesn’t take long for kids to notice when their friends’ beds are different from their own, especially if there are no crib or toddler railings. If your child seems interested in moving up to the next size bed, then he or she may be ready to make the transition.

A new baby is on the way. The move to a standard bed for your kids may be necessary if you’re expecting another child who will need the crib. We don’t recommend switching to a regular bed before your toddler is at least 2 years old. Then again, every family is different and your needs may require you to make the transition earlier or later.

The most important thing to keep in mind when considering a regular kids’ bed for your toddler is what is right for your child and your family. If you have any questions about making the switch, give us a call at (312) 226-6666 and we’ll be happy to speak from our experiences.
